Phanteks Enthoo Primo Full Tower

Normally I start a review with a big introduction on the company and the case, but lets be honest as to why most you are here. So lets not waste any time and get to the fun stuff. At 25.6″ or 650mm tall, 9.85″ or 250mm wide, and 23.6″ or 600mm long the Phanteks Enthoo Primo packs a lot of features that have not been seen any other case yet.

  1. Good review of the case Bill. I agree. Maybe we will never see a Holy Grail PC Case out of the box. As you know we all like to MOD.

  2. Thanks for the review Jesse. If I was getting another case anytime soon this would be it. It looks like a really fun case to play with, and would be fun to come up with some simple easy mods to set it apart from the crowd.

  3. Thanks for the review! Nice to see an actual watercooling build installed in the case.

One question I have is, is there any space to acutally connect up a 240mm thin rad in the front and still retain both the HDD cages? I know Phanteks say the rad itself can fit, but i’m not sure about connecting it up

Any info would be great, as this is the last sticking point of my proposed build

  4. @doyll, I know you had been waiting for this, and thank you for promoting our site.

@davidber, I would pre-order from Phanteks, I heard orders are filling up fast, so there may not be enough to stock those stores until months from now, http://www.phanteksusa.com/products/phanteks-enthoo-primo

@XNine, yeah, those sites missed the entire point.

@zophar, I hope our site becomes the goto place for modding the enthoo primo

@Graeme, the review and sys install was done by Jesse.

  5. Bill, I hope that happens as well. Also thanks for sharing the water cooling overview video with us. One day maybe I’ll get to play with one of them. I think I’ve actually sold a couple of them for Phanteks lol. And I’ve directed several people here for reviews because I like the people that do the reviews and I also like the format. Keep up the good work everybody.

  6. Thanks to everyone for commenting and looking at the review, I really appreciate the kind words.

Yes you can. In the pic below you can see that the HDD cages are in place, the fans mount on the outside, and you have enough space to mount a 30mm thick radiator. I will measure the exact distance once I get home.

  7. What an awesome review Jesse, great work.

$249.99?!  That is nuts.  This case is easily better than almost anything out there for that price.  Having seen it in person when we shot the video, I’m very impressed by the quality of it too.

The build looks amazing as well.

  8. Thank you Thank you Jesse and Bill for your reviews of this case. I’m hooked. I’ve been looking around for a case to do my first water cooled build and I don’t think I’m going to find anything better than this Enthoo Primo for what I’ve been wanting to do.

I do have 2 questions I hope you would be able to oblige me with answers:

    1. In the first video you guys did together on it you noted that a 280 rad was just too wide to fit on the bottom. I think it was a Black Ice GTX280 iirc. Do you know what width of 280 rad will fit on the bottom?. More specifically for my purposes, will a  Monsta 280 fit there? After a bit of googling I believe the GTX280 is 153mm wide and the Monsta is 144mm. Is that enough of a difference to clear the side panel?

    2. Can you say say what the spacing is from the back side of the XT45 360 rad you put in the top and the motherboard? I know that with 70mm of clearance from the top to the top of the mobo that 45mm think rad doesn’t actually extend down in front of the mobo for that measurement, but if it did? I know you wrote that there wasn’t enough room for push fans on the wider UT60 420 to clear your EVGA x79 Dark, but (in case you can’t tell already) I’m just wondering if that would still have been the case if you had tried to go with a narrower UT60 480, or even if not if perhaps the height of your EVGA board’s heat syncs / ram aren’t less forgiving than my MPower Max would be?

Right now I’m thinking I want to put an alphacool 280 Monsta on the bottom (if it will fit & if not then a Monsta 240) and their XT45 480 up top (or if it will fit I’d MUCH rather go with a UT60), both in a push/pull.

I’m really hoping you can help save me (and others) the trouble of learning the hard way what’s going to fit or not or more likely keep me from playing it safe when I could have gotten away with the bigger rad I really wanted to in the first place. I feel you’ve already done just that in so many ways already I can’t thank you enough. 😉

  9. It is, bar none, the best chassis on the market for watercooling at its size and price point.  Minor flaws, but overall, an excellent debut from Phanteks.  Competition is good and this will make Corsair, NZXT, CoolerMaster, and others shake in their boots.

  10. First and foremost Jesse can I say that is your finest review to date my friend  :D

You have put to shame the farcical reviews of other so called PC enthusiast sites by a clear margin.

No bullsh*t, clear, concise and thorough wins the day always!!

I’ve been an advocate of the Enthoo from the beginning but this review has just sealed the deal fella.

Terrific build, thank you once again for the great review and your build talents  ;)

To answer your first question, yes the monsta 280 will not be an issue. Make sure you remove the rubber grommets from the bottom section when dropping in the rad. It is a tight fit but you will have no issues fitting that in.

On the second question, I will play around and get you some numbers as to if a UT 60 will be an issue. I was initially going to use the dominator ram form corsair and the fins on this might come in the way.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting mate.

  12. @Bill

I love the case.  However, they are not following the rules to well.  If you order today, they are charging and taking payment today.  They are not ‘putting a hold’ on the amount on the credit card.  There is a reason why Amazon/NewEgg, et al do not take the money and sit on it for 30+ days before they ship.

I would order from Phantek if they changed that policy and followed some rules (with their CC companies) as well as some state laws.

    Great! Thanks for that!
My main concern would be that although i could get the rad in, I might not have enough room for a compression fitting and tubing. Even if i put a right angle fitting on and ran the tubing towards the rear side panel, there wouldn’t be enough room

You might be able to do that from the bottom. the cages are held in place in the top, and the bottom. If you remove the bottom cage mount, and have your cages hang only from the top, you should have enough space to route cables from there. You could also cut some holes in the bottom of the 5.25″ drive bays to route some tubing from there.

    Edit:

I will get you the exact thickness of the bottom HDD cage mount so you know how much room you will have.

  15. Just wanted to say thank you for a well written and unbiased review. The video you guys made sealed my doubts about the Primo and I ordered it minutes after pre-order became available. Great job!

This is a very valid concern ….and Thank you for bringing it to everyone’s attention here.

    I’ve messaged our Rep.

  17. This is a very valid concern ….and Thank you for bringing it to everyone’s attention here.

    I’ve messaged our Rep.

This is not intended to be a ‘threat’ per se, just a comment.  You can tell the rep the truth.  If it was NOT for your video as well as this review, the purchase I was making was going to be for a Cosmos II.  The other sites that did reviews on the Enthoo case were lacking depth and read more like extended sales sheets.  The Cosmos II is a known entity and review sites carry little weight because you can see what people have done with the case without having to worry how much money was spent on buying banner ads.  The Phantek case though, was given a full on 45 minute video review (even in the potential rain with that ominous cloud) that showed everything that I needed to know.  Jesse’s write up answered most of the remaining questions I had.

The only remaining question . . . Is there a trade-in, or case ordering option on the fans?  I would really like the 140sp_bk_led’s instead.  Considering that there are 6 in the case as is, 6 LED’s would be a nice upgrade to use.

Again – thanks for the kick b_tt work.

  18. Probably the best review of a case I’ve seen. I looked at the title and thought “urghh” another box review.

Although not my cup of tea, the case is well thought out and the included fittings box is a rare thing for manufacturers to do.

(They should be gold plated though for the price :) )

  19. Thank you ASOUTER, and please check out our other case reviews.. we’re the only site that will fit liquid system into the review sample, when it’s feasible for Jesse’s schedule…and We try to hand pick products that appeal to our community, http://themodzoo.com/forum/index.php?/page/articles.html/_/reviews/

That price is very reasonable and why demand has prompted Phanteks to initiate pre-orders thru their website. …and it’s $150 cheaper than 900D

  20. Can the inner rectangle in lower front door be removed leaving just the grill material?

Yes it can, its held in place with a handful of screws. Will take some shots of that tonight and put em up.

  21. Really great review Jesse. I’m really liking this case, Just wish I could afford it.

Thanks mate, a part of me wishes that the case was a lil cheaper, hopefully once it hits the markets we might see some price drops or sales (all cases go on sale at some point, except case labs)

  22. I’m wondering if/when Phanteks is going to offer extra parts for this case, like an extra SSD bracket for that third mounting location, or an extra PWM fan hub, or an extra pump mounting bracket, etc?

The Phanteks designer featured in their videos seemed to suggest they’d be offering at least some of these things for purchase separately, but a chat with a rep on their phanteksusa site gave me the impression they haven’t yet given much if any thought to that yet.

I guess that’s understandable given the delays there have already been getting these cases out – interview vids with the Phantecs designer at Computex 2013 suggested they would have been out a couple months ago already – but it sure would be helpful not to have to wait too long to be able to get our hands on these things.

Just wanted to point out that, even though Jesse hadn’t yet had a chance to get back to me here about whether a 60mm x 120/240/360/480 rad would fit up top (as one of the first with hands-on experience with this case. he’s no-doubt a very busy man trying to answer lots of questions everywhere), he did reply to the same/similar question on another forum saying he did have a chance to check it out and there should be no probs …

Got some good news for you. As long as you are not using a RAM like the dominator, you will have no issues running a 60mm thick 480 rad. I just tested it out with 2 fans stacked together and had no clearance issues. Of course you would have to get the CPU power and ram in place before mounting the fans on the inside.

    That’s great news!

Thanks for putting that up here mate, I appreciate it. And I apologize for missing the answer here.

  25. Nice review Jesse! I really like that you took time to install a system to further show off all the features and just how well thought out this case really is.

I think they have a winner on their hands. Amazing just how mainstream WC has become that it would be feasible to make a case of this caliber.

    Thanks again.

  26. Can the inner rectangle in lower front door be removed leaving just the grill material?

I will start a FAQ section for this case tomorrow but in the mean time here is a pic for you… Will post some instructions tomorrow as well.

Any news on that front rad clearance Jesse?

When you mentioned that another option would be to drill through the bottom of the ODD bays in order to route the tubing, that got me thinking, maybe i could swap out my proposed Alphacool ST30 240, and go instead for an XSPC EX 240 Multiport, as that has ports on the edge of the rad, so its straight shot up though the holes.

Its a bit thinker than the ST30 though, what do you think?

With the bottom hdd Mount removed you have 1.25″ of clearance. That should be enough to route some tubing.

    Perfect! Thanks for that!
If i could ask for one more thing, could you give me the max rad thickness i could get in the front?
Is the space available exactly 30mm or do i have a bit more space to get a slightly thicker rad in (say 35mm)?

I started a FAQ at the very end of the review, and I will add this question in there. Answer will be provided once I get home.

  31. Some of us are wondering how hard it would be to change the LEDs to color?  Or better yet to RGB so we could choose color to suit our mood.

FAQ updated, you have 45mm of clearance

The LED strip used by phanteks is 5.5mm thick, if you can find a replacement you can replace it. I will start a guide soon.

  33. Just read a review of this case on “another” site…no comparison it was the usual vanilla story.

    ModZoo rules the review world!

Haha, thanks mate. We all try our best, and having great members helps too.

  34. 45mm?!? That is interesting…. I’m now thinking I could shoehorn a 240mm xt45 in there!

I have a 240 XT45, I can see if that will slide in without damaging itself or anything else.

  35. I have a 240 XT45, I can see if that will slide in without damaging itself or anything else.

That would be amazing thankyou! I think I’d have to put right angle fittings on the end ports, with the chambers facing down, or put the chambers up and drill 2 holes in the odd bays and route up there

  36. Yesterday, I introduced our Phanteks Rep to Nividia Rep, who handles NVIDIA system builds for Trade Shows, so folks should hopefully see Phanteks cases used by Nvidia at future events like CES

  37. Rec’d this email today regarding the shipping date on my pre-ordered case:

Thank you for your purchase of the Enthoo Primo.  Your order is scheduled to ship October 18, 2013.  If you have any further questions or wish to cancel your order, please let us know at your earliest convenience.

Please accept our apology for this delay and thank you for your understanding.

    Sincerely,

    Phanteks USA

More than a month away. :-/

It’s probably safe to say they jumped the gun a bit with taking pre-orders. I’ve no plans to cancel but I imagine some will.

  38. Getting a new case built and delivered is very complicated.  Huge amount of logistics to coordinate…  and each delay is not just the time of it’s own delay because it throws many other schedules off that have to rescheduled, other steps have to be delayed at least that same amount of time..and these places are not just going to do nothing while they wait.  They will be doing other jobs..  and if those jobs that longer than the original delay than that make finished product that much later.  Three days can turn into 3 weeks very quickly.

I think Phanteks has it’s main design team offices in Holland, not sure anymore.  Now have Phanteks USA in California, cases are built in China.  How know where all the components in the case are from; the thumbscrews, switches, lights, fan hub, feet, boxing, plastic accessory case, etc.  Than boxed cases are put in containers, trucked to docks, loaded on ships to whatever countries, arrive unloaded from ship and clear customs, trucked to warehouse, etc. and finally shipped to you.

Know anybody who had a custom house built and was able to move in on the original completion date?  ;)

  39. As for your front panel mod w/ the grille….. were you able to get filter in behind it ?

yes I did, the filter is held in place my screws and and clips, That whole system is independent of the grill. Will post more pics for it.

  40. @ doyll,

that’s all understandable, but it doesn’t change the fact that Phanteks probably started taking pre-orders too soon given that they are now having delays.

Anywho, I just thought that would be helpful info to mention the latest info on shipping dates in a comment thread about the case that mentions (1) that they are taking pre-orders and (2) that Phanteks has been actually charging people’s accounts and taking payment instead of the customary industry  practice (and as req’d by many CC provider’s policies & even by law in a lot of places) of delaying charges until actual shipment of goods takes place.

  41. @ doyll,

And that is exactly why I would not order from them.  There are state laws, there are processor contracts, and even federal laws regarding taking money and not delivering.  I like the case a lot and realistically, I will probably still hold out for it, but I will NEVER ever order directly from them.  I have read numerous posts on other forums that they have delayed this case numerous times.

Seeing that these cases are coming from China and I would say it is 99% sure it is coming via container over the water instead of air, these cases would have to be darn close to getting on the boat.  For those that do not know . . . most shipping generally leaves from Shanghai.  Seeing that they are coming into the West Coast, more than likely they are going into Long Beach or Oakland.  It generally takes two days at the originating port to get processed and bundled into a container.  Then it is on the water for around two weeks (there are faster boats but they charge a LOT more.)  Once it hits the port here, it is about two days for it to clear the port and get on a truck to the destination.  Add another day for that transportation, add another day for them to get things setup internally.  Now, you are looking at twenty days total.  Seeing that they stated the 18th for shipping, back it up to see where they are.  Assuming everything is perfect, the cases need to be at the dock by the 27th/28th.

I will just leave my post with this.  I assume everyone was taught this by our mothers :)  You only get one chance to make a first impression.  This is not leaving a good impression with me.

  42. I really didn’t mind that Phanteks actually charged my account on this order instead of waiting for it to ship out first before they did like Amazon or Newegg would, especially as it came as no surprise to me that they were doing that thanks to it already having been mentioned here in the comments on this review before I placed my order – and this review and the vids done with Jesse and Bill played no small part in helping make my mind up to go ahead and pre-order it.

Even though it’s now been delayed from the ‘late Sept early Oct’ guestimation I was given by the Phanteks on-line rep on their ste’s chat when I ordered to now the middle of Oct, it’s really not that big of a deal. Yes. I want my case sooner than later, but I’m still psyched about getting it as soon as I can.

I’ve been looking at cases for my first watercooled rig for a few months now, and this case has everything I was looking for and then some.

  43. When your Phanteks case does arrive, please share your thoughts with us here.

I’ve also been contemplating adding dedicated subforum for Phanteks Entho Primo Owners to share their builds, projects, tips, questions etc..

You and I are in a similar boat.  Like I mentioned, there is a 99% chance I am just going to wait it out.  I was going to buy a Cosmos, but because of Bill and Jesse, I want this instead. It just pushes things further back than I wanted :(

I am just concerned though because this case was supposed to ship in August iirc based upon Phanteks announcements.

I understand financially why they are selling direct instead of through Amazon/NewEgg to start.  However, due to the delays, I would highly recommend that they abandon that position and put it on Amazon/NewEgg.  Let those guys do what they do best and handle the payments and logistics.  Or at least . . . don’t charge until it is time to ship.

  45. Awesome review man! I do have a question though,
I was wondering if it was possible to mount an XSPC Photon on the reservoir bracket with a single GTX 780. It didn’t seem like it in the video review but I wanted to make sure since you had some time to play around the case. Thx!

What size are you thinking? The 270 will work on the back, and the 170 will work on the bracket.

  47. Thanks Jesse.
    One more question.
Alpha says they are 144mm. Is that the maximum width that will fit?  I ask because EK are146mm and Phobya are 145mm; only 1 – 2mm (0.039 – 0.078″) wider isn’t much; so was wondering if that’s too wide. :D

  48. Thanks Jesse.

145mm with the 5.25″ bay panel removed, and 129mm with the panel in place.

  49. Nice picture.  Looks very content indeed.  Well ventilated but it might be a good idea to put some mess grills on..  fur protection.   :D

  50. Noticed the Newegg bit about “Release Date: 10/14/2013” and had to laugh. If they receive and ship before Phanteks USA ships their pre-orders there will be some very unhappy Phanteks customers.

I know you’ve seen this already doyll, but for anyone else who sees your posts and was wondering, the Phanteks rep / moderator on their forum wrote this:

No need to worry. Pre-Orders will ship out before we ship any cases to NewEgg. So your case will be on its way to you before they get any cases.

  52. Jessi,
Can you let us know the distance from the top of the case to the top of the top 5.25″ drive bay?

More specifically, I’m wondering if a 45mm thick 480 rad + 25mm fan mounted up top would impede with that top bay or not, and same goes for a 60mm rad by itself or with a push fan, the latter of which I’m all but certain would block most if not all of that top bay, but I’m not so sure that a 60mm thick rad + 25mm push fan wouldn’t also impede into some of the 2nd 5.25″ bay too.

  53. Thanks for posting Brian’s reply. I forgot to update that. ;)

Containers left China the same time and shipping takes at least 2 weeks longer from China to Europe so it’s looking like I won’t be getting mine until end of month or possible early November.  :(

Must be the “slow boat from China” for real.

The space from the top of the case to the top of the top 5.25″ drive bay is 55mm or 2.16 inches. A single drive bay is 41.3mm tall, so 55+41 = 96mm. That is enough space to mount a 45mm or a 60mm rad in push pull and only loose the top drive bay.

Dont forget the fittings if you have them facing the front as they might take more space and.

  55. Thanks a lot for that Jesse. you’ve been such a great resource for all of us anxiously awaiting our cases.

I have another set of questions for you, if you don’t mind. lol. I can’t help it.

    (1) What is the distance from the ledge under the mobo tray to the top of the case?

    (2) And what is the inside distance from the bottom of the case to the top of the case?

I’m eyeballing the new XSPC photon res w/ the D5 base combo (where’s a review on that!!! Has no one done one yet??). The 270 is 350mm tall, and I’m trying to gauge whether it might fit or not on that res bracket between a monsta on the bottom and an xt45 on the top, both in push-pull. If it will fit I’m thinking it’s going to be very close. If not I might go with the 170 photon/D5, or maybe just put a res there and my pump elsewhere.

    FBNuaFo.jpg

  56. I will get you those numbers once I get home. What GPU are you planning on using?

I have reference GTX 760s (short pcb only 6″ long – based on GTX 670s) and XSPC waterblocks for them. I don’t suspect I’ll have any trouble running them & using that reservoir bracket in the Enthoo Primo, although if I do use the photon res I’ll need to drill my own holes since the ones phanteks has won’t line up.

That’s actually better though because if the 270 will fit I’ll need to be able to position it up/down exactly where I need to & I’ll probably just drill the mounting holes through the plastic bracket cover too since I won’t need to remove it to fit my short cards, and I’m thinking it ought to look better – cover up the cables/grommets – by leaving it in there behind the res. I’m hoping that bracket, especially with the plastic cover left on, won’t rattle or buzz with a res/pump mounted to it. I’m not seeing any decoupling measures with that res.

I’m just mainly trying now to figure out how tall of a reservoir I can get away with fitting there between the rads/fans top and bottom. I really like that Photon 270 w/ D5 pump, but @ 350mm tall I suspect it might be a pretty tight tight fit. lol

  57. My suggestion would be to go for just the Photon 270 res and mount the pump where the Enthoo advertises you should. Why?, I personally hate the way XSPC did the inlet and outlets on the photon res combo. With just the res, you can mount it on the res bracket, have the pump hide under the mobo (by PSU), and run tubing in a much cleaner way. Again that is just my suggestion. With that said, it would be nice to see a review on the photon res combo to see how it actually looks.

I actually really like the way the inlets outlets are positioned on that res/pump for how I want my tubes to run in my build. If it’ll fit it’ll be almost like it was made just for it. lol

That, and since I’m going to be using rigid acrylic tubing I wasn’t really looking forward to trying to route tubing back and forth to that pump bracket.

  59. There is ~16″ or 406mm of space between the mobo ledge to the top, and the total top to bottom inside the case is ~22.6″ / 575mm.

Let me know if that helps.

Awesome! It sounds like it’s going to fit, just barely.

    My XT45 480 up top is 46mm + 25mm for the push fan = 71mm
    My monsta 360 on the bottom is 80mm + 50mm for push-pull fans = 130mm.

    So, 71mm + 130mm + 350mm for the res = 551mm
So, judging by all that, I figure I should have about ~10mm space each top and bottom between the res/pump and the fans.

lol, like it was made specifically for it.

  60. Jessi you did great work on this, I enjoy it.

Like to ask about your opinion regarding possibility to inject HPTX in this case.

I know they not supporting this from factor, but was watching your 48 min like (great stuff btw) review with MM on tube, and I think I seen an option to mod this chassis a little.

If not pity, will need to go with 900d instead, but if I’ll have choice…

The motherboard shroud will come in the way of the HPTX mobo. Now with that said, there is nothing that you cannot achieve with some dremel work. Once I get home I will get some measurements to see if its possible or not.

Indeed this shroud can be issue, anyway thanks for your time on this.

  63. WoW, I can see a pile of money being made on this case. Great looking (WC) build. Bunch of golden nanners for the efforts that went into this review. Top notch.

Thank you sir, glad you liked our review.

  65. Hey Jesse,

I had purchased the same LEDs from the link you provided.
Wondering if you experienced slow delivery?

Had ordered mine in early sept, after the estimated arrival date I had contacted them and they told me to wait for another 21 to 29 working days for the resend. Since they think the parcel was lost.

After waiting for another 29 working days, I asked them again but they werent very responsive. I tried asking them if they can track it but they kept ignoring my question and asked me if my address was correct. And when I responded that it was correct and if they could do anything to ensure it to arrive at my place, they didnt bother responding.

Tried contacting eBay, but they wouldn’t entertain because it had passed 45 days of their buyer protection policy.

Wondering if anyone else is experiencing this from seller?

  66. I did not have that issue. What I would recommend is that got leave the seller negative feedback.

Next time if a buyer says you to wait x days and that takes tot past the protection time. Just say no and open a case.

Sorry to hear that you had issues

  67. I can’t leave a feedback, it says item number not found, due to either item number does not exist or I had already left a feedback.
Which I’m sure I had not.

Didn’t know about that policy, first time purchasing from eBay.

Oh well, bound to happen I guess.

    Thanks for replying so quickly.
I’ll go look around for another source.

Oh yeah, and Phanteks Enthoo Primo is awesome btw.
Took a while for them to release it in Asia, but it was well worth the wait.

  68. Awesome review! I own one of these near a perfect beauties, but I must plead guilty to being an airhead simply because, even with a delidded i7 4770K, I honestly cannot see a need or serious reason to WC. I’m using a red Phanteks -14PE to match an Asus Z87 Maximus VI Hero with red and white sleeving throughout. Building was so easy I’m looking seriously at installing a Swiftech H-320 Elite WC kit as my first very limited foray into water cooling.

Anyway, I love the case and have enjoyed building in it. So much so, that I’ll be buying the white version when it’s released.

Welcome to the forums mate, and glade you liked the review. The Enthoo is an awesome case, and I dont think there is another case in the market at the moment that provides a similar level of functionality and build quality at this price point. Water cooling is nice, and it looks good, but its honestly not something that you really need for day to day use.

  70. Just finished and listed the Enthoo Primo version of my clear panel here, http://mnpctech.com/phanteks-case-mods/

You need to remove the 5.25 optical bay and the bottom 240/280 fan radiator bracket (pictured below). I looked into every scenario possible to avoid this, but it was unavoidable for creating an unobstructed view into the chassis.
