  2. Hello, Its time again for a new build and this time I am going to use my favorite material, wood! After lots of planning I decided it was going to be another ITX build that would still fit at least one 240mm radiator and long graphics cards if thats what I choose to go with. The plan is to use closed watercooling loops for both CPU and GPU to make future upgrades easier. Ive seen quite a few wood builds over the years but nothing that really felt like me so this will be my version, should also be quite obvious what case I was inspired by Huge thanks to bequiet! and Asrock for helping out with the hardware for this build!   3. This was a quick scratch build I did as a Christmas gift to my parents. It's got sort of mid-range hardware (older generations), and runs a Plex Media Server, so they can use it to record and watch TV shows, primarilly. It's replacing a computer I built them 10 years ago, that was serving the same function (DVR), up until earlier this year when it stopped working correctly. The front and top are birdseye maple, and the grain flows continuously up the front, around the corner, and down the top. The bottom piece is mahogany, and both are finished with shellac and wax. The rest of the chassis is made from plywood, painted black, and clear coated with semi-gloss rattle can.
  4. Welp, it's been long enough since PCB was completed and I think some major bumps are out of my life, time for a new project! My gaming obsession for the last eight or so years has been Dota and one night last year I kicked the idea of this build around with a friend. It's blossomed in my mind since, time to put it into motion. First off, thank you to my generous sponsors for this project: This will be a scratch build I think? I'm making an external frame out of mahogany and using a Fractal Design Node 304 essentially as a motherboard tray. It will save me some time in terms of layout and I happen to have one on hand. The concept will come from Dota 2 of course. While I could focus on a specific character in the game for a theme, I decided instead to base the mod off of a treasure chest. Players in-game win cosmetic items for their characters by obtaining various chests after they play games. What sort of grotesque name is Fresh Meat for a build? It's the catch phrase of one Dota's most loved/hated characters, Pudge, and from a modding perspective there are two reasons: one, it's a new project, fresh meat for me to bite in to, two, there will be cutting. I though this would be a fun theme to play with and would give me lots of design choices as well as making a mod that almost all Dota players could relate to. Without further ado, let's get into it. A log note: The flow of this here log may jump around a bit. I'm a paper and pencil guy when it comes to layout so I don't have any fancy 3D renders to show you. Keeps up the suspense right? You'll just have to trust what I've got cooking in my head to come together in the end. First up was picking material. My dad has some footage of mahogany available, lucky me :D After I had some lumber picked out, it was time to actually do stuff. First up was making a jig for the chest legs. The legs will taper on two sides, from 40mm square on the bottom 25mm at the top. After that tank was put together, you've got to test it, right? Of course, you can't test on the real deal. Here's what the legs will be cut out of once the jig is dialed in. Can't you see a couple legs in there? A look at the test leg to get an idea of what the shape will be. It's a subtle angle.   6. First of all I'd like to thank Alphacool and Mayhems for supporting this project. Special thanks to Adam from AD Modz, thanks to whom it all started! I've been searching for a large and simple case that can fit two 60mm thick 480 rads. I haven't found one that would have a layout i like so i decided to make one myself. I'm much more of a diy guy than computer head so there is no render models of the build, thread won't be full of awesome professional pictures and it might be not very neat and organised. Disappointment for most. I will, however, try my best to provide as much details and up to date info on what's being done. Actual state of my pc(pretty much all hardware is going to be transfered to the new case): Now the new case... I wanted something simple, minimalistic but strong and big. Two 480 rads fitted without problems(push/pull possible on both) with an option of adding more rads if needed(don't think I`ll ever need). I love working with acrylic but acrylic only case wasn't an option since the size it big. Went with aluminium as it`s light and strong, acrylic will find it`s place as top/bottom/inside panels. Size of the case: 70cm x 60cm x 33cm Components i7 5820k MSI x99 sli plus 16 GB Crucial Ballistix Nvidia GTX 1080 SuperFlower Leadex 750w gold Samsung 850 evo 250gb SSD WD 2tb SSHD Watercool Heatkiller IV pro acryl EK gtx1080 acetal block 2x Feser Xchanger 480 rad Alphacool VPP755 pump with Watercool Heatkiller top Aquacomputer Aquatube reservoir Aquacomputer Aquaero 5 LT 8x Enermax Cluster Advance fan 3x AeroCool Dead Silence fan Onto the project then: assembled shell(incredibly sturdy while only 6 kg of weight) cut top/bottom acrylic to size and drilled fan holes and sanded. was going to paint the panels flat white but frosted effect looks very good, might leave it as is in the case and with a rad I will be using Enermax Cluster fans for both rads but as case fans I wanted something a bit different(for a contrast), chose these as they are very quiet and push reasonable amount of air. Painted white and sleeved That's it for now, not much i know and it looks like nothing at this stage but gotta start somewhere. WD Crimson Description This is my current scratch build project "WD Crimson", it's an inverted 90 degree motherboard design that uses an ATX motherboard, SFX PSU and 240mm CPU cooler displaying its hardware in a unique way while also with an emphasis on space efficiency, dimensions being 403mm Long x 385mm High 210mm Wide.   9. "WD Tyrant" Description This case is designed to make a M-ITX sized system using ATX components, the overall case dimensions being 385mm Tall x 416mm Long x 206mm Wide. The cases construction is mainly 3mm thick plate and angle aluminium, with acrylic windows and basement divides. "WD Bonk" Hello all, This is my second scratch built case, It's a case that's designed to be a replacement for a friends ageing case, The name "Bonk" is a shortening of his nickname and I thought it was a fun name for a scratch build. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I've been doing a lot of hacksawing, filing and scribing markings for holes and design boundaries. A whole lot of this happened, filing the aluminium for precise edges. Result of a lot more work than it looks, all markings scribed ready for drilling and hacksawing.   12. Dark Matter Scratch Build: Who am I? A bit about me; a few years ago I suffered a traumatic brain injury that caused my brain to hemorrhage. After spending a long time in intensive care I kept thinking about case modding. Before long, its all I could think about. After recovering from my injury I was left with epilepsy and brain that no longer functioned like before. I started to look at things differently. Inspiration for mods began to pop up in the oddest places. I eventually became overthrown with modding ideas and designs. Soon I decided it was time to start. Theres nothing quite like being in the grocery store and yelling, “thats it, 45 degree angles” and then running out of the store like a mad man. No matter what I was doing, it all kept coming back to case modding. Today case modding is my life and it allows me to be truly happy. For some case modding is a hobby but, for me its a lifestyle.   13. Not really a PC build but thought I would share it here for Zoo buds. Like I don't have enough irons in the fire,I started my sim rig build today. Nothing fancy,just some good old metal work. I have been planning this for about a year (imagine that) but when I made the fan grill for someone else's sim rig bug hit me hard! Well as luck would have it my Mom wanted to get rid of a workout machine they had setup (rarely used of course) fist thing I thought was "METAL for my sim rig"! So Cyber Monday I ordered a Logitech G27 wheel and a racing seat from Summit Racing. Seat showed up today around 3:00 so I got started laying it out. Looks like it is going to need little work to make it all fit. Not shown is seat mount I finished also. I will be using it for F1 2012-2013 and then I will signup for Iracing league and see how that goes. I also plan on doing so mods to the pedals and then I will make a set from scratch when I get time. Then I will be adding Buttkickers and simvibe on four corners for more motion input. Questions ‪ ‬ ‬People seem to state their age at the beginning, well I'm 21, and: ‬ I’ve built this case from scratch a few month ago and originally didn’t intend to upload anything. But since I live in a village in germany now and nobody around me really is into computers, I thought I’d share this with you guys, just to maybe get some useful feedback.‬ Enjoy! Before we begin: This was my first ever case modding project, I had no idea what I was getting myself into and I probably won’t do anything like it again (in the near future;) It was so much work. I decided to build a case from scratch also because I wanted something unique, but mainly because I had been waiting and saving up for a new PC for years, traveling with a MacBook. I figured waiting a few weeks more wouldn't make a difference. And I was right: building this was awesome fun and a good decision after all. Specs: Intel Core i7-4790K (Tray)ASUS Z97-PRO GAMER Nvidia Geforce GTX Titan (the one with the GK110)CL9 KINGSTON HyperX Fury Blue Series (2x4GB)Thermaltake Hamburg 530W (80Plus)Cooler Master Seidon 120v (RL-S12V-24PK-R2)WD WD2002FAEX Caviar Black (2TB)KINGSTON SSDNow 120GB (SATAIII V300) Material: Apart from the steel angles in each corner, all the screws, bolts and hinges this case is made entirely from plywood and high-density fiberboard. Tools: I was lucky my flatmate had a miter saw, which was taken into consideration when brainstorming for the initial idea, obviously. Cutting plywood at a 45° angle without power tools wouldn’t have been possible. Additionally I was using a cordless drill and a jig saw for the front- and backplates. Also what would modding be without the good ol’ hot glue gun? The shape: Is it perfect? No! Was it measured? Yes! Well, that’s what happens when you just start doing stuff without worrying about perfection: No symmetry. But I didn’t set out to build a crazy X-shaped case that would be perfectly symmetrical, all I wanted was the X-shape. This is the actual initial sketch that I drew after discussing shapes with a friend. It would have been a boring triangle or something if it wasn’t for him. The next day we went to the hardware store and then had to go back there almost every day for over a week. Because the mainboard needs to be secure and the X-structure needed a bit of stability prior to attaching the front- and backplate one length of plywood had to go all the way through the middle, separating one of the X’s feet. Perfect to use as a PSU compartment. It was about at this point into the process when the whole door-idea came along. The kitchen cupboard hinges weren’t the first idea. I looked around a few scrapyards for some trunk-dampers (car part that holds up the trunk or hood) but they were all really too hard and forceful for my purposes, so I went with something less fancy. The whole thing closes with a reverse ball-shaped door catch: there is a biconcave piece of metal getting trapped between two metal balls. These are in two little pipes and spring loaded, so that you can easily adjust the pressure needed to open it with a small screw on each side. Since there wasn’t a plan or anything, and only that one drawing, progress began slow and I ended up holding pieces of plywood together all the time, just to get an overview and see where holes needed to be drilled or cut. Eventually every piece of wood had been cut out and test-fitted with a makeshift backplate, which was a big struggle. It was incredibly difficult to measure holes for the I/O shield and graphics card because they outreach the backplate a little and I had already fixed the mainboards screws in place; so that the job of drawing a line on the backplate while holding on to everything, including the graphics card (so it wouldn’t snap the PCIe slot) turned into a nightmare of estimating distances and blindly drawing curvy lines. Even though I would have had enough hardboard leftover, I only made one prototype and then one final backplate. When everything started coming together, I was worrying about airflow and opened up my old PC case to strip it of all its fans. Once that was done I modded the smallest of them to have only one side of casing left to mount it, using pliers and scissors. The bottom-intake was a rather spontaneous idea but really necessary, making that giant hole though was quite a task. Jig saws are NOT meant to be used in a forty-five degree angle. Yup, that right there is the start key. It's a proper lock cylinder, works like a push button, turns one way only and is spring-loaded You have probably already figured out the basic airflow of this case by now, bottom sucks in - top blows out through the radiator and then of course the Titan blows out through the backplate. Additionally the red fan on the picture is now located directly above the CPU, these are old pics after all. Details: The choice to go with the perforated frontplate was so last-minute, I had already booted the Build a few times before buying it. After a few weeks of running and benchmarking this beast there’s no denying that dust is a major issue. This I will tackle over the next week, hoping that I won’t create other issues by fixing this one (i.e. temperature rises). And then I’ll hopefully upload a few more pics, I’ve read how much the admins hate it when someone doesn’t update their worklog ^_^. Here you can see the little crack in the plywood caused by my attempt to put a screw in it, with too little predrilling. Just behind, mounted above the CPU there are two cut pieces of 45°-angled timber with rails milled into the inside of them. Originally intended to function as a HDD-slot I had to remove my drive from there because of heat issues. It was fitting nicely in there, with all the cables going up so you couldn't see it from the hatch, but luckily it got too hot, because removing it helped me discover general airflow issues around the cpu. Which is why now my CPU fan from my old case is mounted where the harddrive was. I'ts a tight fit and blows upward, but still it creates enough turbulence in there for the heatsinks to work properly. A closer look on the hinges and the closing mechanism. This was taken after roughly a month of use, you can tell that way too much dust is beeing pulled in. In the background here is the switch for the interior LED's. Found that in an old Lamp, and then I just wired it up to some 12v cable with a pair of scissors and tape, before securing it there with a load of hotglue. Questions: People jokingly called this PC an XBox, or 'the better XBox' but I rather not have that filthy name for my case, "The X" is the first other thing that came to mind, I mean, what else would you call it? Honestly, if you have ideas spit 'em out! Do I need to ground the components, since it's wood? Or worry about electro-static/-magnetic stuff? The PSU is of course grounded via the wall. And the motherboard (aka everything else in there) is pretty much directly connected to it, so no problem, right? Ok, I've tried. Yes, a DVD(/or BlueRay)-Drive would physically fit in there, I don't see the point though, why build one into the X? To me less is more and so far I've just plugged mine in and used it external termporarily. And frankly I'm sure I won't be needing a (permanent) DVD-drive in my PC in the future. Or do you guys think I should do it (possibly even cut an opening into the frontplate) ? That is it. Bye for now ;) frostnetz

Bear with me as it might take a while to get everything constructed. I'll be fitting in work in between diaper changes of our new baby born Aug 21st 2015.   18. Hanging in the Balance Hanging in the Balance was my entry into the 2014 Intel NUC case design competition. The design was inspired by a balancing clock that I've seen several woodworking friends make before. The main NUC case hangs from a cantilevered arm extending up from a base. The case is built from scratch by hand and by eye, using solid wood for the arms and base, and plywood with veneer for the main case itself. It has been done largely by hand tool work in traditional methods, and no fancy machinery. There were a few tweaks to the design as submitted, due to changes in the competition requirements post-submission. The case comes apart into 3 pieces for shipping, which required a little rework. That wasn’t mentioned in the original contest requirements, but once it was added I became weary of my design being shipped in one piece (let alone arriving that way :lol:). The Design: The Kit:

  20. Victorian Desktop My wife’s laptop is no longer working happily, so she’s asked for a desktop. Well, I can’t leave well enough alone, so why would I build her one in a stock case (of which I have several laying around), when I could do another scratch build project?! This case will be another wooden scratch build, as many of my projects are. I have some old cast iron pieces that will be incorporated into this project as well. It’s going to be built out using solid mahogany, and will be finished in a way to emulate a lifetime of use.   23. Mini Watercooled HTPC It should come as no surprise at this point that I love building small wooden HTPCs; or just adding wooden elements to my case mods, for that matter. When AMD released their 25w socket AM1 CPU’s a few months ago, I thought it would be the perfect platform for building a new low power HTPC. I picked up a motherboard and CPU combo, and went to work. This, however, is where things started to evolve… Once I got the hardware, and found the stock fan, something had to change. I’m sure the stock fan does fine, but I wanted something else. I thought about modding an existing CPU fan to work with the 2-mounting hole configuration, but I quickly came to the conclusion of "Watercool it, because why not". It’s true, I’ve wanted to use one of those 2x80mm radiators for a slim watercooled build for a while, so I thought what better opportunity than now to make that happen. Overkill? Not at all… mostly :D
