Been a while since I've posted a project log, so for those who don't know me, or don't remember, Hi, I'm Mosquito, also known as Chris, and I'm a case modding enthusiast A coworker and I were talking about some of the case mods I've done in the past, and as a result wanted to try watercooling his BitFenix Portal case. He thought switching back to the Wraith cooler for the CPU, and doing a custom loop with a 120mm radiator for just the GPU would be all he'd get. I told him I bet I could fit a 240mm radiator in there, so that's what we've decided to go after... It actually took a lot less modding than I thought it might, as we got relatively lucky with the radiator just clearing the GPU block, but we'll get into that more later. First things first, this is the Bit Befnix Portal, for those who are not familiar Something that makes things a little weird, is that the chassis slides out of the main shell, so we had to make sure we allowed that to continue working through all this. This is what the 'stock' build consisted of. ASRock B350 ITX, Ryzen 1600X, and an RX Vega 56. First things first, gotta tear that down. With the case empty this is, roughly speaking, what we intend to make happen. Removing the back fascia gives a pretty compact little chassis. Though with some indexing pins on the bottom, it doesn't sit on the workbench very well! Next up, remove the drive cage. I'm not sure why this wasn't easily removable, as the bottom is mostly held in place by some sliding connections, but never the less there were 6 rivets to drill out After some fiddling around, we realized that it was going to be a lot more work to get the radiator mounted on the outside of the case, so we would have to make fans in front work instead. Next up, we'll have to get it to fit both fans up front, so stay tuned for that, and please ask questions, post comments, and let me know what you think.   4. . So I have been going back and forth on what kind of desk to build. I wanted something thin and sleek but also wanted something that would house a watercooled build. I also wanted to do something with RGB lighting (seeing as this is the new craze). I have done some stuff with individually programmable LEDs in the past and wanted to incorporate this into my build using an arduino. I started a desk build a couple weeks ago, got about a quarter the way through it and decided I didn't like how it was coming. It was made of wood and once together and partially painted, did not look like I wanted it to. I then decided to do a render, plan everything exactly, and then build it. I wanted something that hadn't quite been done before. I wanted a shape, design, and setup that was different than everyone else. I believe with what I have planned, this will be so! I have done some custom builds in the past, including another desk, but nothing quite like this one. It is completely from scratch and all made by me. Spartans FTW! Tossing around ideas for custom mounted temp displays inside the desk. Please note that the plan is to sidemount the GPU and build a plexi shelf to mount it to. I tried making it in sketchup but it wouldnt come out right. This is only thing that will be different. The spartan head and the 3 lines will be all RGB lighting. The max thickness I plan on it being is about 6 1/2" tall.
  5. Project Blizzard | Diy testbench with custom watercooling Hello, its about time i start a build log on my latest project witch is a scratch built test bench with watercooling. Huge thanks to Aquatuning.de for the watercooling gear!. This is also my first build log i am posting here so keep your eyes open there will be more stuff coming.   6. So, I am lucky enough to have had this case given to me by Cougar. I first saw it a while back and have wanted to get my hands on one ever since. Finally, with a little help from Bill, I was able to get one. So a HUGE "THANK YOU" goes out to Cougar and Bill for this awesome opportunity. I must say now that I have my hands on it, I am even more in love with it. Like Bill said in his review, they used alot of screws. I was able to get all the way down to the very bare chassis with just a screwdriver and a allen wrench. This should be lots of fun!
  7. Tempered glass seems to be quickly becoming the next big thing in computer cases these days. The Anidees AI Crystal has no shortage of tempered glass, sporting both side panels and the front in all tempered glass. It gives a cool aesthetic, and a full view into the case from all sides. First of all a shout out and thanks to Mosquito (Chris) and Bill (Owen) as I regularly spam them with ideas on Facebook and in general they're pretty fantastic guys (at least they haven't told me to #$&@ off yet ^_^ ) that just happen to live down the road from me. Secondly photos will be uploaded as I sync them through iCloud (causeeee I'm lazy) to the PC and I will be updating the primary post rather than doing additional posts as I go along. I Haveeeeee a dream! That dream is to have the cleanest desk in America, without having a crappy AIO and wireless everything, so how do we do that?   9. Introduction Welcome to my first build log here on The ModZoo. This build was started a little over a year ago over on OCN but its really taken off in terms of progress, mistakes, stupid ideas, and everything else PC. The idea of the build was to shove as much as I possibly could into the EVGA Hadron Hydro because case manufacturers really do give too much space in cases aimed at the mITX market. mITX is meant for small and compact builds, but with how case manufacturers make their cases to support 300mm GPU's and tall cpu coolers, I took it as a challenge to shove as much as I can into the build and show them that their versions of an "ITX" case are way off. Some companies are going in the right direction, but still arent hitting the mark. The EVGA Hadron Hydro is one of those types of case. It does really well in the overall dimensions and what should be included in a mITX system but its still a tad bit too big when the mITX market is trying to go as small as possible (Like the N1 case, Dan a4, etc...). Secondary goals are to get a show-piece that I can take with me to LAN's. The system will most likely be sold off after completion, so any questions on the case or measurements will need to be asked before that time as a forewarning.
  10. Hello everyone, Back in October Asus had a local case mod competition, for the 2015 Cluj-Napoca (Romania) Dreamhack event. This mod was our entry, which won us the first place. It's a scratchbuild with a side HUD, which displays system details, in real time. The system itself sends the information, to a Raspberry PI, inside the case. The Raspberry PI handles the side panel display. The side panel is the outer level of a TN, put on top of a laser-etched plexiglass, which is put right on top of the motherboard. The case is mostly plexiglass and abs, cut on a laser CNC.   11. {fancy banner pending} Hello monkeys. long time stalker, first time blogger. Many of you know this build is finally a done deal. But with your permission I would like to make a little more formal build log here. And please, forgive my indulgence with this first part, but there is a lot of backstory I need to get out there. This project was conceived in 2012 when I purchased the Corsair C70 chassis from the Hardware Canucks BST. It was a good deal, as the seller was also including the entirety of an XSPC full water kit. I had been following and dabbling in the World of Watercooling for several years at this point and was beginning to amass a serious collection of parts and tools. I was also becoming friends with many like minded folks through various forums, especially on Dazmode Forums. You all know who you are and since you are so numerous I'll say it here, "thank you all!" Also in 2012, I was really inspired by Bill Owen's Planetside2 Mod. As you will see once we get into it, there are a several homages, among the dremel cuts, selection of parts, and paint finishes, to my years of watching and learning from MNPCtech. I would also be remiss if I didn't dedicate this creation to my Dad. Tom Zettel was a dedicated father to 9 children. If there was ever a man who so closely resembled Homer Simpson, it was Tom. He worked at the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station, drove a sagging station wagon, and enjoyed his fair share of donuts and beer. When he wasn't working, he spent endless hours toiling over zany projects to entertain his many children. He bellowed when he laughed, and to be sure, was never short on expressing his pride in each of our accomplishment. Sadly, He passed away from cancer in 2011. In the end, my Dad's modest estate was delivered to his children. There was one item in particular that I had marvelled over since my childhood. It was this trophy that was given to Dad in 1984, for his years of service at the Bruce Nuclear Heavy Water Plant. It is so simple in design. Handcrafted by some of his colleagues, the barrel was filled with a sample of pure Deuterium Oxide. For this reason, as children, we were never allowed near it. The best we could do was to be amazed and mystified by it portents, as it sat unceremoniously on a shelf, wedged among Dad's thriving collection of Scientific American, OMNI, and Penthouse. When it came into my possession, the Heavy Water had long since evaporated. But its ability to inspire memories of my childhood remains. I wish I could get some replacement deuterium oxide. Fortunately the contents of my closet include a sample of Zinc Oxide, branded as Ice Dragon Nanofluid. In my mind, a suitable substitute once this barrel is refilled and display with proper prominence within my PC. Alright already. Enough of the Gush. here's some work.
  12. Hey hey guys and girls. We have another awesome themed mod coming your way. This one is based off of one of my favorite comic strips growing up as a kid. Spy vs Spy The Following was obtained from the History section of the Spy vs Spy Headquarters. http://www.spyvsspyhq.com/history.html Simple yet meaningful is one way to describe the wordless black and white comic strip that makes up Spy vs. Spy. The cartoon created in 1960 by Antonio Prohías, depicts the antics of two distinctly different yet similar spies who try to get the best of each other with clever yet strange schemes of espionage and deception. Published in Mad magazine since 1961, Prohías began working on Spy vs. Spy in Cuban, but fled to the United States in 1960 just days before Fidel Castro took over the last Cuban free press. When Prohías came to the United States he knew almost no English, but Mad magazine readers and editors quick accepted him and loved his work. Before he got the job at Mad, he worked in Queens at a clothing factory by day and drew by night in his cramped apartment. His earlier works “Erizo,” “Oveja Negra,” “El Hombre Siniestro,” and “Tovarich” would not work in his new country where the idea of communism was not as prevalent or well taken by pleasure readers. In Cuba if you were not a supporter of Castro you were considered a spy, and this is where he got the idea. Prohías considered himself a spy and thus the idea was born. Prohías submitted his rough pencil concept and design sketches to MAD’s editors on normal 8.5 x 11 paper and would latter redraw the entire carton twice the size for reproduction in the magazine. He would go through the comic strip with pain staking detail and make sure all edges and lines were detailed in his dark bold pen and would almost never ink over his pencil drawings. Spy vs. Spy is now a national icon, symbolic of the Cold War representing good and evil and the struggle for equilibrium. Prohías would stealthily sign each of his Spy vs. Spy cartoons under the title panel, in Morse code, which spelled out the words "by prohias." This is one of the most overlooked details in his work. -••• -•-- •--• •-• --- •••• •• •- ••• Antonio Prohías passed away February 24, 1998. His masterpiece concept of the two spies battling it out lives on in the continuing work done by his successor Peter Kuper. The Core X9 has this built in plate that can be removed from the bottom panel so you can install a massive radiator in push/pull. However this is not going to work for what I have planned. For what I want to do the entire floor has to be cut out. Remember kids always use proper safety gear when working with power tools and hazardous chemicals. It doesn't matter how careful you are. Things Happen. * The bottom of the top X9 has been cut out.* * Now after stacking up two empty X9 cases and lifting them both a couple times I quickly realized that once all the hardware and coolant has been added this thing is going to be extremely heavy. Therefore I am going to add casters. Each caster is rated at 150lbs. * Yesss much better. * The rest of the gear from Thermaltake has arrived. * * EVGA sent two gorgeous Z97 FTW boards for our project. * Time to get these bad boys fired up on the test benches. * * Alright Time to get started on the prep work for our paint. * * This is what your case should look like after your preliminary sanding...Do not take it down to the bare metal.....Just take the shine off of it. it should look dusty like its been sitting there for a while. * * Two of the rads are getting prepped for paint. They are going to be painted white. * * Time to get started on cutting the Motherboard mounting plates ready for the Floating Motherboards. * * Remember kids always wear the proper safety gear when working with power tools or hazardous chemicals. We don;t wear safety gear because we are not careful. We wear it for the things we can't control.*(Poopadilly Happens!) * * After the plates have been cut this is all that's left of them. Just enough to hold it in place. Alright time to start shooting some paint. * * I was worried that the additional white would not work well with the light ring...Glad to see I was wrong. It really makes the light pop. * While I waited for the paint to dry I got started on the sleeving. * I have two PSU's to sleeve. This 750w DPS G and another 550w DPS G. * Going to be using some Telios Sleeving from Mainframe Customs(http://mainframecustom.com/) Provided to me by the guys over at Sanctum Sleeving(http://sanctumsleeving.com/) * The double wire didn't quite come out as well as I hoped. Still not too bad. One 24-pin down a hundred more wires to go. I am really liking the new Thermaltake GPU water blocks. Love the Modern Minimalist approach. All but 4 fans have been sleeved. * Getting started with the EVGA Z97 FTW Motherboard. The heat sinks are going to be removed and painted White. *
  13. Intro: This is going to be my third major build. The first was a water cooled AMD powered machine in a 750D with a black and red theme. My second build carried the same theme of black and red into a 900D powered by a 4770k. Being my third build I wanted to pull out all the stops on this build. The build be a custom desk build. I love the crossdesk but the price and availability prevented me from going that route. So I decided that I would build the desk from scratch. Being in the military I decided I wanted to do a military theme build but not one with ACU or Multi-Cam pattern but one that was more focused on the special operations side of the house. Me personally am not in that community but I have a lot of respect for those that are.   14. Mini Watercooled HTPC It should come as no surprise at this point that I love building small wooden HTPCs; or just adding wooden elements to my case mods, for that matter. When AMD released their 25w socket AM1 CPU’s a few months ago, I thought it would be the perfect platform for building a new low power HTPC. I picked up a motherboard and CPU combo, and went to work. This, however, is where things started to evolve… Once I got the hardware, and found the stock fan, something had to change. I’m sure the stock fan does fine, but I wanted something else. I thought about modding an existing CPU fan to work with the 2-mounting hole configuration, but I quickly came to the conclusion of "Watercool it, because why not". It’s true, I’ve wanted to use one of those 2x80mm radiators for a slim watercooled build for a while, so I thought what better opportunity than now to make that happen. Overkill? Not at all… mostly :D
  15. Hello! I should state from the inception that this is not an E.E.L. project, regardless the fact that it has my username attached to it. This is a documentation of a rather high-profile client (that I have chosen to remain anonymous for everyone's safety) of Performance-PCs' system build that I've been charged with handling. I was asked kindly to create a project log for it, so I calmly stated that I would if the person asking would slowly put away the firearm that was against my temple. Now, you won't find the usual muck that you've come to expect from E.E.L.'s foul and decadent project logs. In fact, you may very well find it difficult to find sarcasm. Yes, amazing, isn't it? But what you will find is consummate professionalism. And the word "genitals". Let's get started, shall we? What I, the hired gun, will be working on today is a small, teeny, tiny little case from CaseLabs. Yes, that CaseLabs. And they are known world-wide for very teeny, tiny, microscopic little cases. The case in particular is none other than the TX10-D, with some expansions chosen by the client. See? Like I said, very small! So, some boxes started showing up out of the blue... I really thought perhaps we should have isolated some of these in case of (highly unlikely but probable) explosives, but the odd looks and mumbling from the co-workers put that idea to rest rather quickly. I began to tear into some of these when I had some time to do so like a child on X-Mas morn, only to realize everything was to be assembled. So it really was like X-Mas morn. Alright... I guess I have some work ahead of me. So, a smidge over an hour later, I have this...refrigerator, or something, sitting in front of me. Man, it's a lot smaller than I thought it'd be! But it still beats a Japanese efficiency apartment. Alright, play-time is over. Time to get some work done, right? Right. I began assembly of the motherboard trays which allow you to slide them in and out of the case (innovation!); they have some handy, well, handles present that I need to install on the tray. I noticed something rather interesting... Apparently CaseLabs does things so swiftly that they forget to remove the screws from the handles before powdercoating them. LOL. No biggie. Just a torque-wrench or something will get it loose. Moving on, the usual collection of "vandal switches". ...Notice I didn't say Bulgin? It's because they aren't Bulgins. Bulgin is a brand, in case no one knew that. :) I'm guessing Mod/Smart or something based on the housing. Oh well; it works fine. Moving on. Let's take a look at some of the modest gear going in this build. First up is a pair of rather slow, lower-tier CPUs here... Oh, and hey, a couple more slow CPUs! Wow, four CPUs? Must be something going on. Found a Bigfoot NIC in the box too. A box full of some waterblocks from some company called MIPS... Never heard of them. :rolleyes: And an overview shot of most of the modest gear going in this build... See? Not a lot of money in this at all! Some RAM or SSDs or something... Some kinda motherboard or two for stuff... I guess these are video cards? Is that right? :shrugs: Some kinda RAID card for stuff... Some kinda modest PSU for like, power, or something... Sound cards? I dunno. Some more RAM and stuff. There's more I guess. But let's get started on tossing some of it in here, okay? Black, Grey and White is the planned colors. This case have maybe not seen 1.000 of mods but there is quite some fine ones and as well some really spectacular Cosmos II out there. So I hope that I can lit up your fire of attension and hope that you will follow the progress of this long term project. The timeline is as following. Will be finished at the event of NPF#16 in 2015. I am excited to share My latest project here at the ModZoo :D The Plan for the case is to create a horizontal motherboard ,removable and Watercooled Apparition Apparitional experience, an anomalous, quasi-perceptual experience Vision (spirituality), inspirational renderings, generally of a future state and/or of a mythical being Marian apparition, in which the Virgin Mary is believed to have supernaturally appeared Ghost, the disembodied spirit or soul of a deceased person Doppelgänger, the ghostly double of a living person Bilocation, the ability/instances in which an individual or object appears to be located in two distinct places at the same instant in time Update 1 The cases for the build are 2 Antec P180 mini's :blink: I will need to remove Both motherboard trays hard drive bays and completely unrivet one of the cases so I can make the doors work few shots of the general layout of the build Backside before cutting Let the cutting begin :P Few spare parts after the Carnage Using a Caselabs ATX tech bench for the removable motherboard tray and with a temp gpu for testing Build will have dual 7970's with Ek waterblocks :) few shots of what the front will look like Update 2 will be the hardware list :rolleyes:
  18. Hello boys and girls, I am back with another build log. This time I will be using a Corsair C70 in Gunmetal Black. The idea is to create a nice clean fully water cooled system and to use the space inside the C70 as efficiently as possible. Most of the components that will be going into the system I already have. One item that am am on the hunt for is a motherboard. My two favorites right now are the Sabertooth Z77 board and the MSI Z77 MPower board. The build specs are as follows: CPU, i5-3570K GPU, GTX 670 Power, AX650 Mem, Mushkin Blackline Ridgeback 8GB Storage, Undecided but I do have a Force 3 60GB SSD I can use Motherboard, MSI Z77 MPOWER Water cooling: XSPC Raystorm CPU block XSPC Razer GTX 680 GPU Block XSPC EX240 or EX360 XSPC RX240 Bitspower Z-Multi 150 reservoir XSPC DDC Pump Top Swiftec Pump Bitspower fittings. As for any mods that I will be doing, not sure on everything yet but I will be replacing the window panel and I will be using custom made paracord extension cables. I would also like to try and use hard piping for the water loop. I will be editing this post with pics and updates. Here are the first pics of the case fresh out of the box. Playing with the special effect :)/> Got myself some dark grey paracord from the local army surplus store. This is the first time I have ever used paracord for sleeving, Previously I used the inexpensive plastic sleeving from Frys. The paracord is so much nicer imo. :)/> All finished with the sleeving. I wanted to do a black stripe down the middle of the cables but the army surplus store was all out of black. I am not very patient so I just went ahead with all grey. :rolleyes:/> Here are the home made tools I used to remove the pins from the plastic connectors. Update #1 I got the system together in order to plan my water loop and to allow the system to continue being useful while I wait for a new motherboard. The bottom rad mounts in the C70 where not ideal when using a thick rad so I had to improvise. Luckily the perforation on the floor of the C70 allow perfect spacing to offset the rad. I had to move the rad forward and to the outside. Still there is a tight fit. I mounted the res to the upper hard drive cage using some motherboard standoffs. Here is a shot of the full system together using the Asus Maximus IV Gene Z/Gen 3 I have decided on the MSI Z77 MPOWER motherboard which I will modify a little to get rid of the yellow accents. Here is the stock board right out of the box. And here is the modified board with brushed metal decals over the yellow accents. Update 2/3/2013 I am testing out some ideas to make the rads look better without stripping them down and painting them. Update:2/8/2013 Here are the tools I used to fit the tubing. Working on the tubing, This was my very first time doing anuthing like this, I made a few mistakes in measuring, sure glad I bought more then I needed, also the bender is not very good for this job. I was not able to make multi angle bends with it and had to change my tubing layout a little. Finished the tube cutting and fitting Tubing painted black and I am finally leak testing the system.
