Caselabs SMA8 - Monochrome

Recommended Posts

Hello again,

I'm actually working on a second project.
I will mod a Caselabs SMA8, it is a dream case for me since I've seen it. :)

There is not that much to say about the case, except that it is one of the biggest and priciest cases on the market.
The qualitiy of it is a dream.

hardware:

CPU: Intel 5930K

Mobo: Asus X99 WS-E

memory: 32GB Klevv Cras 2133Mhz

VGA: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti Superclocked+ ACX 2.0+

Powersupply: EVGA SuperNOVA P2 1200 1200W ATX 2.3

Storage: 2x Samsung Evo 850 500GB

Watercooling:

CPU Block: EK-Supremacy EVO

VGA Block: EK-FC XXX

pumps: 4x Alphacool VPP 655 PWM

reservoir: custom

tubing: hard tubing

fans: Noiseblocker Black Silent PL1, PL2 & PK2

fan control: Aquaero 5lt

The case:

I've chosen Gunmetal Grey, I think its the best looking Caselabs color.

You can easy remove the tray, I like this option a lot.

Enough space for two power supplies

SMA8_Case_012.jpg

a lot of room for hardware. :)

SMA8_Case_005.jpg

I will use a 560er and 280er radiator in the bottom section.

SMA8_Case_006.jpg

In the Front would be enough room for another radiator but i will just mount fans there.

I love that case!

I've cleaned the pumps.
Changed the fittings from Bitspower to Barrow.

New fittings, later I exchanged the green o-rings  for black ones.

Besides that, I used some new screws. :)

That motherboard is making me salivate. I had my eyes on the X99-M WS, but its M.2 is limited to 10GB/sec! I'm sure there is a legitimate reason for this, but it was a deal breaker for me. Now I'm thinking possibly the EVGA Micro 2, but it just doesn't have the level of refinement the WS boards have. #firstworldproblems

I believe I had read that it was to keep x16 x16 x16 for the PCIe slots if you wanted to, but I agree that it's unfortunate and I'd rather have 2 x16 since chances are you'd max out an mATX with 2 GPUs rather than 3...

I understand they have professional applications in mind when building a board like this, but I couldn't imagine anyone buying an mATX board with the full intent to have three slots running at x16. They'd skim right over the -M and go for a full-sized (or oversized I suppose) ATX board. I've never owned any other brand mobo besides Asus so buying out of my comfort zone makes me a bit nervous. If the gamer gods are feeling extra generous maybe ASUS will release a Rampage V Black Edition when Broadwell-E drops.

Thank you.

Yeah, I think also thge mATX board looks amazing.
I didnt bought the WS because of the features, even more because of the perfect look.

I continued in designing the "waterplate". Its nearly finished, it can be milled very soon.

I hope it will fit. :D

Big thanks for supporting this project with 32GB Cras memory.

It starts with a nice packaging which has a very good feel of the surface.

Opening the box the heavy moduls come to the fore.

I got the waterplate on friday, so I started cutting the case.

therefor I printed the final design and transfered the cutting edges and drill holes to to the Caselabs tray.

SMA8_WiPl070.jpg

SMA8_WiPl071.jpg

Before starting to cut with the angle grinder, another part must be removed.
Therefor I just need to drill some rivets.

SMA8_WiPl072.jpg

The rough cuttings were done using the angle grinder, small cuts by Dremel.

SMA8_WiPl073.jpg

SMA8_WiPl074.jpg

last step: final shaping by using some files.

SMA8_WiPl075.jpg

Fits:

SMA8_WiPl076.jpg

I also give it a try in the case, fits very well and looks pretty cool.
