Wargames WOPR computer

From the movie Wargames i bring you WOPR.

Love this movie, and love the WOPR.
Started planning this a half year ago, tried to contact people in the US having some info about the real model to get measurements and color codes etc.
Got some good info and now its time to get it rollin´.
I found some sketchup model of the WOPR, but the measurements were totally off, and some parts were to big/small, wrong place and so on. Took me almost a month to get all details right in the sketchup model. Used the movie of course and all pics i could found on the net. Also got some emailed to me from a previous worker who made the original back in the 80´s.
Size of the case will be about 19x8x6", perfect to house a ITX motherboard with a 3870K AMD, i have a Intel 330 128GB SSD somewhere and a Corsair H60 that will to the job perfect :)/>
I do not play games, so the graphic power is not a issue for me.

If someone dont know what the WOPR is.

Now from the start, it may look a bit messy until i get all the parts and stuff together :)/>

The roof of the WOPR. Rounded wood stripes to get rounded parts without sanding me to death :)/>

Adding some round corners, Using 20mm pipe to get perfect corners.

The three panels for the LED´s

Sketchup model, got them CNC cut to get perfect holes everywhere

woprleds2.jpg

My first order of LED´s, 400 of them... After some counting, im gonna need 1000 more :)/>

After some re-measuring, the first part i made was to small. Forgot to change the setting on my table saw :)/>

Trying to hold all pieces for a photo :)/>

heh i watched that movie quite recently. Though being a software programmer myself, it was pretty silly :lol:/>

Will be interesting how you hook up the LED's, maybe some arduino action for a complex light show?

let the simulation begin!

I bought a arduino first for the job, but after examining the flash sequences i noticed its just on/off in different rates on the LED´s, some of them are lit all the time, some off all the time.

Going to start out with a led flasher with adjustable flash speed, first i had a 2 channel for testing but i have now ordered a 12 channel flasher. The flasher lights up different clusters of leds that are spread out on the case.

Here´s how it works.

RED - cluster 1

BLUE - cluster 2

GREEN - cluster 3

YELLOW - cluster 4

And so on.

The clusters contains both yellow and red LED´s and have their own specific location.

Each (except for two, one always lit, one always off) clusters get lights on for X milliseconds, X is different for each clusters of LED´s and all this together gives the nice blinking and lightshow on the WOPR :)/>

This work, to find what color goes where, wich led is lit togheter wich others, their speed and location and so on took me a month.

But, after i tried to just do some random blinking, it didnt look right, so i got stuck in perfection :)/>

I have about 35 of the pics below, each containing the ~1400 leds in different modes. + a layout for what color goes where.

Awesome ! Arduino is an excellent platform for this stuff!

What kind of chips are you using for the leds?

Not there yet :)/>

LED´s will probably be the last step, except for soldering the clusters i do now and then :)/>

Slowly growing up :)/>

sorry for the mess around the bench, i dont have time to clean up for the pics ;)/>

Of course there will be some descent final pics and video of it.

Yeah, not much to show right now. Been soldering 500 leds more and done a great deal of sanding and filling all uneven parts.

What do you guys think about this.

On the real WOPR there are some lines around the rounded corners, seen on the pic below.

I havent decided yet if im going to replicate it on my case, or do you guys think this is a important thing to make ?

Tried to do lines on some scrap, went ok with a "scribe" just making some lines in the plastic, but probably will take some time. Same time i dont want to take any shortcuts but also not want to put many hrs into something maybe not visible.

Lines or no lines ? :)/>

Been sanding and sanding to get straight edges and round corners.

The top parts getting good now, and ready for gluing. But i think i leave some parts to the last step so i dont get any problems adding the electronics :)/>

Adding a pic of the real deal, from almost the same angle.

Nothing more to show yet, im sanding and cutting plastic.

The pics above made me see some errors, my tower is too high, to wide, to deep so i have been cutting it down to look better :)/>

Hardware done too, me and mr C4B12 made a deal and i will take his old ITX board and a AMD 3850 APU, will work perfect for this.

Will shift the APU to a 3870K from my HTPC.

Been thinking about custom watercooling, but hey, i dont want to mess around and will go with the first thought with a Corsair H60 i have in a box.

Got in touch with a visual effects guy from Wargames to ask for measurements i didnt have, but no luck. He was really fascinated by the build so now i have real pressure to get it done, and get it done good :)/>

At the first mail he wasnt so happy that someone made a copy of their "product", but after showing some pics and my story of why i make it its allright. (i believe this matter of making stuff with trademarks/known stuff have been a topic at the mod zoo)

My biggest concern with the WOPR was the doors, they are countersunk and have rounded edges.

Take a look

3.jpg

I tried different solutions, cut open pipe, sanding in a angle and other stuff, nothing really good.

Now i found this, and whats im going with. Not 100% identical with the original but good enough.

Some putty and sanding, and after that i will run a router bit making the edge rounded i think will do the job.

Now that's an original Mod. I don't think I have ever seen a WOPR mod. You picked a great movie theme with that one.

I look forward to more.

Glad to see that the case is interesting for others than me :)/>

The LED´s is probably the one of the reasons nobody have done it earlier, or maybe the case too, gives me headache every day when i fit stuff together to see how it looks :P/>

Soon time to start put everything together, need to figure out some way to open the case. Motherboard will be attatched to the bottom part and everything else can be lifted off.

A visual status from the sketchup model. (not made by me, just use it for measurment after heavy modification)

Light gray - done

Dark gray - not done

Been a hell of a week.

First we got hit by a snowstorm, se pic below :)/>

I had bought the wrong glycol for my car, so i added to little and froze the engine.

Heat gun and some hours later engine started and no leaks.

Today i got in the car to drive to the store and pick upp some glue, tools and other stuff i need, noticed how hard it was to steer. Got out and see that i have no air in the front left tire, and half in the right...

Sometimes the gods just is not on my side :)/>

Coming some big updates soon for the WOPR, this case is going to be really crazy :)/>

A little pic from Sweden

27 inch snow on the parking lot...
